Daily writing prompt
Which animal would you compare yourself to and why?

As long as I can remember, I have had a kinship and definite affinity toward snakes. Have I ever owned one? No.

I haven’t because growing up, my mom was terrified of snakes, and as an adult living on my own, landlords aren’t a huge fan, either. Certainly not because I don’t love them.

Comparing myself to a snake is part of that affinity. The way that they shed their skin when they outgrow it is a huge one for me. I like to think of myself as consistently growing and changing into someone that I like more as time passes. I hate the idea of stagnating and staying the same. I find the literal shedding of skin a great metaphor for that.

Aside from that, I have been accused of being a bit cold-blooded both literally and metaphorically. I’m often freezing without any obvious explanation, even on warm days. I can barely tolerate a temperature below 70 without bundling up. My doctors say that might be part of my fibromyalgia symptoms, but I’m uncertain. I’ve been this way as long as I can remember. I was born in the cold months, perhaps I just have an inherent longing for warmer weather. Who knows?

I am also more on the nocturnal side. While I do maintain a more societally acceptable bedtime than I used to, I do my best thinking and imagining after the sun goes down or before the sun comes up. The daylight hours leave me feeling sluggish and ready for a nap, not ready for action or creation.
